This fall semester in Through the Lens of Alcohol we explored as a class, in a small group setting, how alcohol has been viewed through the review of various literature. Various short stories, plays by Tennessee Williams, books such as Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, and even the recently released movie The Glass Castle were all analyzed and discussed as to the role of alcohol/alcoholism and how it affects both individuals and society as a whole. The way society has viewed alcohol has changed over the years, and that can be seen in the way literature documents and reflects this. We discussed current topics of debate regarding alcohol, including the legal drinking age and how alcohol contributes to rape culture on college campuses. We even got into discussing how alcohol affects the body on a scientific level, which interests me as an aspiring medical professional. The class also got to experience a guided tour downtown Cincinnati and learned more about the brewing history in Cincinnati and the rich history just a few streets down from campus. Overall, this was undoubtedly my favorite honors experience yet and I thoroughly enjoyed the way the class was constructed and the knowledge I gained on a subject that has come to affect nearly everyone in society.
